Finished another batch and I actually took a SG this time. Go me. The OG was 1.052 and the kit said it should be at 1.043. The temperature in the house was around 75. Could someone tell me why the SG would be a bit higher than expected? It came out to almost exactly 5 gallons, maybe a touch more. I did a full boil. Perhaps the hop utilization increased the gravity? Thanks everyone.

Temperature accounts for part of the difference. If you had topped off to 5.5 gallons to allow for trub, you'd be really close.

Hops won't make any difference in gravity.
