Just brewed a NB German Alt, extract, supposed to have 1.052 OG. Mine came in at 1.046. What can I do next time to correct that?

Extract or AG? If extract, did you have to use some water to top it up to get 5 gallons? If so, it's common that the top-up water didn't mix thoroughly with the wort, and that gave you an inaccurate gravity reading.
