I started secondary fermentation this evening and when I opened the primary container a strong smell of sour apples flew out. Is this a normal smell?

Sour apple smell is normal for young beer, it can also mean that it's fermented a lot of white sugar. It's normal.

Thanks for the reply. I guess everything seems to be going well then. No suds and becoming clearer in secondary. I realized last night that I have no idea what type of beer I'm making. It's Brewers Best American Light. I'm assuming a lager but I don't know for sure. Any thoughts?
