Anyone else get excited about football during the offseason like I do?

I enjoy the NFL offseason almost as much as I enjoy the regular season. I'm glued to the NFL Network this week watching combine coverage.

Free Agency starts in a couple of weeks.

The draft is in 2 months.

I'm a bit of a draftnik, I'll admit it. I have my own first round mock draft written down each year just to see how close I can get. It's sad, I know - but I'm a Lions fan. The draft is my Superbowl.

Would there be any interest in an HBT Mock draft? I'd be willing to organize it and handle everything. Basically everyone gets assigned to be the GM of a team and make a first round selection and or trade for that team. Obviously it would be best to have 31 people (SF does not have a first round pick and NE was forced to forfeit the 31st overall selection so there are only 31 and not 32 1st round picks this year), but we could double up on teams and have 16 people and it would still be doable.

If you are interested, reply here. If we get enough people we'll hammer out the details and make it work. First 30 replies get in... obviously I make 31. Teams will be assigned randomly at a later time.

Would you rather see teams randomly assigned to people or let them pick their favorite team on a first come, first served basis?

If we're picking teams, I pick the Lions, and Dude gets the Packers :D

Of course that is how I think it should work, but we may have a hard time filling up all the teams then.

If I have to pick for the hated Vikings, so be it. This sounds like too much fun to be an a-hole about it.

Bah! Pitchers and catchers have reported - the boys of summer are getting into game shape. It's time for BASEBALL!

Leave the winter sports for when there is nothing better to do! :mug:

lets do a mock Baseball draft too!

You thinking of doing this in real time? That could be fun. I'll take the Pats (and watch them trade down). If we got like twelve people, we could each take like three teams, them "pick" for them in chat as the draft unfolds.

Doing it live is pretty fun, giving each GM the same amount of time that the teams have on draft day to make a pick.

The other option is to give each GM 24 hours to make a pick and do the whole thing in the forum. It gives more people a chance to participate in the event that they are unable to make it to chat the night that we choose to do the draft.

As long as we have enough people, why not do both? :rockin:

What do you guys think about Jake Long? Think he will go as high as Joe Thomas did last year?

Yes. I will be amazed if Jake Long makes it past the Raiders at #4, and I'll be surprised if he is not taken #1 or #2 overall by the Dolphins or St. Louis. He rates just as high, if not a bit higher (depending on who's draft guide you're reading) than Joe Thomas did last year. If Long had come out last year he would likely have been regarded as the top OL prospect in the draft ahead of Thomas.

That is what I was thinking but I know if he fell to the Lions they would pass him up anyway there to stupid. They will probably get another WR lol god They are dumb.

Well let's do this - those that want to participate post what team you want to pick for. If we end up with a dozen or so people then we'll do as bird suggested and randomly assign the remaining teams evenly among everyone.

ohiobrewtus - Detroit Lions
Dude - Green Bay Packers
the_bird - New England Patriots
RICLARK - New York Jets
BuffaloSabresBrewer - Buffalo Bills
capcrnch - Chicago Bears

What about a live draft in chat the night before the draft on 4/25? 5 minutes to make a pick or work out a trade?

I'm just proposing ideas, we'll go with the majority vote. I am, however going to claim trade veto power. I've been involved in a couple of these things where two buddies work out rediculous trades that aren't even realistic and I don't want to see that happen.

At pick #15, here's a short list of who the Lions will be looking at:

Jonathan Stewart, RB - Oregon
Rashard Mendenhall, RB - Illinois
Derrick Harvey, DE - Florida
Aqib Talib, CB - Kansas
Mike Jenkins, CB - USF
Leodis McKelvin, CB - Troy
Phillip Merling, DE - Clemson
Jeff Otah, OT - Pittsburgh

If I had to guess, I'd say that they'll pick one of the DE's unless someone projected in the top 10 drops - but that could all change dramatically after free agency.

Harvey would be a good pick but so would Talib But it seems they dont care about DB's because of there Tampa Cover 2, But I think they need a db or 2.

Im sure were not going to keep him long.
If I had a nickel everytime we traded one of our All Stars.

Why do they have so many problems over there, is it a Cap room issue?

Always has been always will be. I dont see what the f^cking problem is extend the god damn contract to like 5 or 6 years.

I hear ya, you guys had an amazing team and it seems like they were only allowed 1 year to make a run, kinda sucks. Ive always liked buffalo and want to see them do well and they don't even get a chance and it seems like your division is starting to get better now as well.

Anyone else that wants to claim their favorite team in our mock draft?
The Pats have been taken, so I don't really mind who I draft for. I don't want to deprive anyone of their favorite team, so perhaps us non-aligned GMs can just take the worst unclaimed teams that are left once people have picked their favorites.

Yeah, the Lions, because i'm into punishment and turmoil, but someone took them too ;)

I'll take Da Bears.

The Lions are too freakin' easy, it's unfair. All you gotta do is pick a damn wide receiver... :D

I think they're going to break the trend again and go for some help in the secondary.

Lord knows they need it.

I think I'm going to be out. I can't figger out how to access chat from home anymore...

There's a setting on Macafee that's blocking IRC communications, but I'll be damned if I can find the freakin' program to adjust the settings.

I'm not sure if chat is the best way to do it anyway. I've been thinking about it and while it's more fun to get everyone together in the same place and talk some smack, everyone has other things going on in their lives and getting everyone together at the same time for a few hours usually never works.

So how about we plan on doing it in the forums, each GM will have 24 hours to make their pick. That way no one is too rushed and can participate at their own convenience. We'll kick off on Monday, March 24th.
