We just had a large snow fall and some cold weather over the past week. The drain in my alley doesn't work so I have a nice big slab of ice right outside of my garage. The city ignores our requests to fix it. I hear states putting beet juice and cheese brine on the roads, along with salt/other. Do you think spreading spent grain on the ice along with salt will help with traction or just make a bigger mess?

Cheers

I'm sure it would help with traction but I'm sure it would be messy and track inside your house easy

While I would not condone it and risk getting a ticket for littering/making roads unsafe/violating some road law that I don't know. Some states/countries use sawdust on the roads. Similar concept but the grains may be too big without further milling?

I'd try a small patch but I'd assume the grain will absorb moisture and then freeze not leading to the best traction.

I've heard of people using spent coffee grounds on iced up walk ways, so why not spent grains. Try a small section and see how it works!

I'd be concerned about the smell. When we lived in town, I made the mistake of dumping my spent grains on the compost pile behind the shed. Stunk up the yard for a couple of weeks!

Now that we're out in the sticks, the deer don't let it get rancid.
