Hi all,
My name is Joe. I am a 40-year old commercial banker (41 in 23 days, but who's counting?) and I live in Frankfort, Ky. I started homebrewing sometime around 1995 when I lived in Cincinnati. I bought the Brewers Best starter kit and bought the American micro beer kit - I will NEVER forget looking in my closet after getting home from work and seeing the airlock popping and that AWESOME SMELL...I was brewing! Other than losing about a gallon due to about 5 fits of anxiety, it went great and I was hooked!
Whoever tells a noob that brewing your own saves money...well, they mean well but they lie! LOL. Because if you like this hobby (*cough* obsession *cough*) you will soon find yourself spending lunch hour surfing Northern Brewer, or if lucky, going to a good homebrew store...OF COURSE YOU NEED THAT CARBOY! Hell yes you need an wort chiller...and that mash paddle....and I know kegging is easier than bottling so I REALLY NEED that regulator and those to refurbished corny kegs...and now I need another refrigerator! And ....well, you guys get it!
I have brewed probably around 50 batches, and the majority were from 1996-1999. In 1999 i moved back to my hometown, got married and a lot of my equipment was stored poorly. Then I had kids and there was even less time. But I have always managed at least a couple of batches a year and I recently said "why am I not pursuing what is the greatest hobby in the world" and am getting back into it big-time. I have a witbier in my primary and i have an oatmeal stout up next, an english pale ale (my first all-grain in 11 years) an Altbier and who knows what else. I have a dunkel bottled (tasty) and a pils conditioning in mini-kegs.
I just wanted to give you guys a little background on me and introduce myself. While I do have a lot of experience, I've been a "seat-of-my-pants" brewer. I've brewed to style and meticulously kept notes, done my readings, adjusted my pH...and I've brewed batches with my tap water and without so much as touching a hydrometer.
But I already love this site. You guys are helpful, funny and encouraging. I apologize in advance for all of the stupid questions!! ("Holy $%$^!! I opened the fermenter to take a reading and farted over the bucket!!! Did I ruin it? Will that affect the overall profile!!?" LOL)
Happy Brewing! Glad to be here!
