Hey everyone,

I recently bought a brewing setup from an auction and am in the process of getting everything organized for my first batch. (still building the control panel) While I’m figuring out most of it, there’s one specific part that I can’t quite identify. I’ve attached a photo to this post – if anyone has an idea of what this part is for or how it’s used, I’d really appreciate the insight!

Thanks in advance for helping out a newbie brewer!

Looks like a "grant".

"In brewing, a grant is a small, open vessel that's placed between the lautering vessel and the wort kettle. It's used to:
  • Prevent vacuum: A grant prevents a vacuum from forming in the lauter or mash/lauter tun when wort is pumped. This can happen when filling the kettle or recirculating wort, and it can cause stuck mashes or turbid worts.
  • Assess wort: A grant allows the brewer to evaluate the clarity and flow of the wort.
  • Check grain bed flow: In larger systems with multiple lauter tun outlets, a grant can help determine if all parts of the grain bed are flowing well.

In most breweries, the grant has been replaced by a sight glass, but it's still a standard feature on many small pilot systems. Most homebrewers who use all-grain also use a type of grant, even if they don't know it. "

Cheers!

Kinda hard to tell the tank layout from the pictures. If the supply is from the mash tun (and I suspect it is), it looks to be a grant. If the supply side is from the kettle (to a heat exchanger perhaps), it could be a hop back.

If you are clever, you might be able to use it for both.

I agree with everyone too, a grant. I installed one in my brew system for the reasons stated above and also as an accumulator/ filter.

I use it between the mash tun and brew kettle and from the kettle to the fermenter. I use mine as a filter too but I can make wort additions with it.
