Hi All.

My name is Jin and im from Northern VA. i've been thinking about making my own beer for almost a year. Just did my first brew last weekend.

Decided to start off with all grain and did the NB Dead Ringer IPA kit (Bells Two Hearted clone). My volume was a bit off (too much water) but my efficiency must have been high cause i hit OG perfectly after the boil (1.064). I was a bit worried about fermentation taking place since it looked like not much was going on after 15 hours... but then around 48 hours the fermentation went crazy and it blew the top off my carboy; came home and the plug was 4 ft away with krausen all over the place. threw on a blow off tube after that. So far i think ive done everything right.... hopefully i have an awesome IPA to drink in a few weeks.

I am definitely hooked on brewing. I might brew another batch this weekend or the next. i have like 10 different recipes from the recipe section i want to try out. :)

I'm in NOVA and need someone to split 10 gallon batches with, message me if you want to brew some time.

Glad you're hooked, it's fun.

Welcome to the obsession. Sounds like a great first brew. It took me a couple blow offs before I realized that a blow off tube was a thing. Hahaha. Glad you picked up on it quicker than I did.

Yeah, i just did another batch this weekend. Let me know if you are planning a brew. I lurked the VA forum and saw there's a few clubs in the area. might need to check those out.

I cleaned and sanitized everything and put the plug with airlock back on while i ran to home depot to get the right tube to make the blow off. when i got back it blew off again lol.

Where in NOVA? I'm in Annandale/Falls Church.

I'm in Lorton.

I must be the only one who uses whiskey in the airlock.

I think most either use starsan or vodka in case of accidental suck back and worry of flavor contribution..... now if it happens to be a ris that may not be a bad thing but if it were a cream ale might be bad.

Ohh interesting. So starsan is safe to consume.

Welcome to the area and homebrewing. There is a relatively new group named the Prince William Brewers Guild that is growing in size. We meet on the third Saturday of each month in the Woodbridge area. Next meeting is 4/19. Let me know if you need more info. Membership if FREE!!!

Sheldon

Hidely ho neighborino. There's also GRIST a little to your north in the Arlingon/Alexandria/Falls Church area. And DC Homebrewers. And NOVA Homebrewers, and Wort Hogs. And the granddaddy of all the area clubs, BURP. And probably a few others I'm forgetting or unaware of.

I also use Star-San in the airlock.

Hey Sheldon. I will see if i can come down to the next meeting. I'm in Lorton so Woodbridge is right there for me. i'll send you a PM.

Diluted to the recommended rate correct, it is phosphoric acid which from listening to podcasts and reading information online is actually a good thing for yeast. (Read post #50 https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f11/ch...r-chemicals-notes-brewcasts-58928/index5.html)

Don't fear the foam!

I use Idophor in mine.
