I'm doing my first all grain batch tonight and thought I should do a 2.5 gal test batch first. My question is sparging absolutely necessary with this size batch or can the entire 2.5 be mashed? I know sparging rinses the sugar from the grain but I don't have a fly sparge system and am unaware of other methods.I know this may sound like a dumb question but I haven't brewed all grain before and could use some help ,thanks.

No, you want a certain ratio of mash water to grains. Most folks do 1.25 qts per pound of grain.

You will then do a "batch sparge". You can search for that and find all you need to know.
