Someone tell me why sometimes they are thick with good holding and lacing and sometimes they are like a root beer or soda?

I could use some also! if you figure aout how to get it let me know.( i am having the same issues with several different brews!)

all grain or extract? if its all grain just add some flaked barley. that will increase the body and head retention.

Don't we all??! I notice if I get my hop schedule right,& Get what little hot break extract malts give,I get great head. Not to mention, chilling in 20 minutes. And the mnost important one, chilling for two weeks with the right amount of priming solution. Head is carbonation driven, after all. The more fridge time, the finer bubbles,& thus thicker head you get. Ya gotta work it,man!! :D
