I picked up 2 very nice (clean and undamaged) refrigerators at work the other day. One is a SR-A1780W Sanyo 1.7 Cu.Ft. White Cube Refrigerator. It is small, but I am planning on putting together a small fermentation chamber for Lagering. With the build of a box sufficient in size to hold 2 carboys (6 gal), I am hoping that adding a small air circulating fan inside the unit will allow me to maintain 50 - 55 degree temps inside the box. Any suggestions on insulation material or a possible fan to use would be appreciated.

The second refrigerator is a SR-3620W Sanyo 3.6 cu.ft. White Counter-High Refrigerator and is now under my wall mounted tap's (3) in my game room. I store my bottled beer and bar goodies such as 151 rum soaked cherries, martini olives and onions in it.

It's not often I come across a nice score, but working here at the hospital where they are tearing down an old building is paying off. I also recently picked up a stainless steel commercial table from the old cafeteria.

Salute! :mug:

True, true......... but this stuff wasn't even trash, it was left behind when the move to a new facility was made and I got a material removal slip from my supervisor to take it out of the facility. It took me only a short time to clean out the interior of the units. The compressor section didn't even have any dust or debris in it.

Anyway, I am always on the look out for material I can use to improve my situation at home as it relates to brewing and storing my beer.

I will post pictures of the fermentation unit when I have assembled it.

Salute! :mug:

DAAAAAMN What a sweet score... I never seem to come across stuff like this... Am I the only person who actually has to pay for things!?!?!?!

OK so just to make sure you're aware 50-55F is fine for fermenting your lagers, but for lagering you will want it colder like < 40F.

Nice score, though! Totally sweet. Never gotten anything like that from my job...

Yep...... I constructed a fermentation box yesterday. I insulated it and used a digital controller I got (for free) to monitor and control the temperature inside. I used the small refrigerator I picked up and tied the controller into the compressor and a small fan I placed inside the box. I got the temperature inside down to 42 degrees. This is without any vessels of course, but I think it will get there when I need it too.

I built the box to hold 2 primaries. When only one is used, I have a blank off to reduce the space size inside. I can't wait to brew another lager.

I plan to use the box to maintain consistent temps on Ales also. The controller is programmable so I can change the setup at anytime.

Will post pictures of the completed project soon.

Nice score. What did those fridges have in them before? Boubonic plague? Extra "parts?" Just kidding. I'm jealous of the score.

Food was all. I do work in a hospital/biomedical facility, but this equipment was used to store goodies in the wing where the equipment came from.

The large one is now full of Southern Tier and Erie Brewing beer. I am a bit behind on the pipeline. Need to start brewing on a weekly basis if I want to keep up with demand.

Salute! :mug:

Not to drag an old thread but....... What size did you build that box? How has it worked out for you? Got any pics?

I have a Haier (HSA02WNDWW) 1.7 cu fridge I am planning on build into a fermentation chamber.
