Followed a combo of bobby m's IC YouTube and Jamil-o-chiller here: http://www.wortomatic.com/php/articles.php?ID=11 sans the whirlpool tube. I figure it will be easy to add that later if I decide. Used a 60' roll of 1/2 ID ( yep, 1/2 internal diameter... Huge). It won't win any beauty contests but it was my first time working with copper and NONE of the joints leaked!! I was sure I would have some. It fits perfect in my keggle I use for BK and comes up to about 12 gallon mark.

Now I'm wondering how much wort this will displace...

Wow, how much were the materials? I have no need for one of these, as my chiller works just fine. But now, I WANT one. Beer porn.

A lot more than I planned and I could have bought one almost as good for a little less. When I got to the depot they had 50' of the 3/8 od for $54 but I thought that was too small. I went with 1/2" ID, a LOT bigger and fittings were simple. Had to buy all the stuff except torch... Flux, silver, wire brushes, pipe cutter. About $170 total. I have extra tubing, plenty to add a whirlpool.

Will see how it goes tomorrow with maiden voyage of this. Plan on using my old 25' chiller as pre chiller with ice.

Awesome thanks. The top coil sits 12-13 gallons so 14 with it in. That's manageable... Barely!!

How did you get your math? 1/2" ID copper tubing has an OD of 5/8".

Volume of a tube = Pi*OD^2*h -> Pi*(5/8)^2*(60*12) = 883.57 cubic inches.

883.57 cubic inches = is 3.825 gallons

Although that does seem like a lot...

Uh oh I hope that's wrong. I will have about 12 - 13 gallons of wort when I put the chiller in... Keggle is 15 gallons...

It is a lot. Should by Pi*radius^2 * length. You're off by a factor of 4. Should be 220.89 in^3, or 0.956 gallons. Day Trippr had it right.

volume of a tube is not PI * OD^2 * h

volume = PI * (OD/2)^2 * h

.95 gallons is what I came up with

Oh good call! I know I've been out of school for two years but whoops, should have caught that

Well the good news is I don't even think it displaced a gallon it just went right in

Also I didn't bother with the pre chiller, it took my boiling wort to 90 in about 15 mins. I then turned off the recirc, waited about 15 mins, then pumped into carboys. Pretty happy with the performance can't wait to try it when the weather is cold.
