I have a packet of Wyeast and a pound of DME.

What is the best way to make a starter out of these two ingredients. Is anythign else critical?

I use 1 cup of DME(or 1 1/4 lbs) for a 2L starter. I put the DME in and add water to 1500ml mark, boil for 15 minutes, cool, add yeast. I also add a pinch of yeast nutrients but it's not completely necessary. You could boil in a pan, cool, and then add to a clean, sanitized growler with foil on top. I would smack the activator 24 hrs before and make the starter about 18 hrs before brewday. Make sure you shake that container as often as you can for those first 12 hrs.
