I was playing with my camera while making up 10 gal of Tinania Ale. (Titania was the wife of Oberon, so you see what kind of beer I'm trying for.)

For 10 gal:

Prepare Water (16.20 gal total)
Amount Item Type
2.10 tsp STAR Ph Buffer (Mash 1.0 hours) Misc

-- Prepare Ingredients for Mash
Amount Item Type
13 lbs Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain
5 lbs White Wheat Malt (2.4 SRM) Grain
1 lbs Caramel/Crystal Malt - 20L (20.0 SRM) Grain

2 min Mash Ingredients
Mash In: Add 5.94 gal of water at 172.4 F
60 min - Hold mash at 154.0 F for 60 min
-- Sparge with 10.26 gal of 168.0 F water.
-- Add water to achieve boil volume of 13.12 gal
-- Estimated Pre-boil Gravity is: 1.044 SG with all grains/extracts added
Boil for 60 min Boil Ingredients
Boil Amount Item Type
60 min 1.00 oz Hallertauer [4.80 %] (60 min) Hops
30 min 1.00 oz Hallertauer [4.80 %] (30 min) Hops
10 min 0.53 tsp Irish Moss (Boil 10.0 min) Misc
5 min 1.50 oz Saaz [4.00 %] (5 min) Hops

-- Cool wort to fermentation temperature
-- Add water (as needed) to achieve volume of 10.50 gal
-- Siphon wort to primary fermenter and aerate wort.
-- Add Ingredients to Fermenter
Amount Item Type
2 Pkgs Safale US-05 Chico (Fermentis #US-05 Chico) Yeast-Ale

6/14/2009 Measure Original Gravity: ________ (Estimate: 1.050 SG)
6/14/2009 Measure Batch Volume: ________ (Estimate: 10.50 gal)

You bring up another answer to a question I've had.

I assumed that I couldn't use my boil kettle as a mash tun because it was my boiling pot but you emptied the wort into the bucket, then ran the second one and dumped that into a bucket as well, then readded to your boiler for the full boil

I think I can just get a false bottom for my kettle, dump the wort into a bucket, repeat.. then empty and clean the kettle for the boil.

Takes a few minutes longer to clean the kettle but it should work nicely. I also would be batch sparging.

So many possible brew setup combinations... ahhhhhhhhhh

nice setup and nice methodology to your brewing.

thanks for sharing the pics.

Only drawback i see is lack of insulation with the brew pot as an MLT. Unless you're planning a direct fired Mash.
My Boil pot doubles as my HLT. and I use Ale Pales like the OP for transferring and collecting runoff. For now

Not sure what your referring to as Direct Fired Mash?

My stainless kettle holds the temperature pretty good. I've steeped grains for 1/2 hour trying to work up mentally the process of mashing. The kettle with the lid on and very low flame keeps the temp pretty steady.

Granted I've not done this with a but load of grain inside.

My gf wont let me get more coolers and stuff that we have no space for, so I'm trying to combine it into what I have available.

This method would allow me to use just the one kettle instead of having to get more items which drives her nuts.

So many decisions.....

you answered your own question :D

direct fired mash tun means you have a means of controlling the heat once you start. I use a big cooler as my MLT, so once I add in the mash water, I'm pretty much stuck with whatever temp I have

This is Direct Fired Mash.
It is simply keeping a flame on the mashtun to maintain temps, vs a cooler Mashtun that does not have a flame on it. It uses the insulating properties of the cooler to keep the temp steady for the duration of the mash.
If you turn the flame off your pot them temp would definitely cool down over that hour time period. Thus the need to reapply heat (Directly to the Pot) aka Direct Fired :)

Nice photo's!

I don't know why I never thought of sparging out to ale buckets. I usually sparge out to some spare pots from our kitchen and piss the wife off. ;) I'll have to give this a try next time.

i thought about that too, but then i remembered that i'm too lazy and thats just one more thing to clean :D

Thanks for the info.

After looking at brew-in-a-bag and my pot size I don't think it will work.

I'm probably going to get a screen/false bottom this weekend for my existing kettle and then just collect it as he did, in buckets. I also like the idea of only having one kettle to work with.

I was trying to find what method will work for me and I think this is a solid one.
