I ordered a bag of crystal 60 from the LHBS, but got a bag of Muntons 150. He says it's really Crystal 60, but they label it weird. Is it really crystal 60 or a substitute?

Pilsner on the left. Crystal on the right.

That sounds hokey. But plausible.

I once wanted C60 but none out front. He went back and grabbed some marked 120.

When I mentioned he said "Just use half as much".

Yeaaaaah. No thanks buddy.

Munton's 150, i would not call a substitute for C60. However it depends on what the LHBS carries. It is considered more of a "Dark Crystal", which is most likely between 60L and 80L. So if thats all they carry for medium crystal, it may be what you ordered, but if they carry C10, C20, C40,...etc then i'd say you got a substitute.

Munton's 150 does not have a lovibond of 150, i am pretty sure it is actually 75L. 150 is just their "model" name.

That came off a homebrew site that sells it. "approx. Lovibond 150 "

I checked Muntons website and couldn't get any info on it.

Another site also called it 150l.

From yet another site:
Whole Crystal 150 Muntons (England) $2.09 $9.00 ($1.80/LB) $17.00 ($1.70/LB) 145-188L

If it aint 150L there's a lot of confusing going around.

75l is possible, it seems too dark for 60l. It tastes like crackerjack caramel that's lightly toasted. It's missing the heavy dried fruit flavor of darker crystal. I figured 150l would have to be pretty dark and have some roasted qualities.

Well, i guess i could be mistaken. It's possible. However, what we can both agree on is that it is not C60...

Muntons 150 is definitely not a good sub for Crystal 60.The 150 is much darker and has a taste like toasted crackerjack caramel. The taste really comes through in the beer.

Any suggestions on what to use it for?

The number 150 printed on the bag is an EBC rating. You have a bag of medium UK crystal malt, 45-60 Lovibond.

in case anyone is researching this malt like i currently am: there is indeed a lot of confusion out there.

from muntons website, http://www.muntons-inc.com/craft-brewery-products/, we get:
IOB 515ml EBC Units colour = 130 – 170
ASBC/LOVIBOND Colour = 49.5 – 64.6.

a few online US retailers have this EBC 150/Lovibond 60 rating, but the majority claim 150L. i'm siding with the manufacturer.

I use this malt regularly and have it set in Beersmith at the average L for 57. I use 5% in the main beer brewed, 95% 2 row mashed at 153 F and I use WL 090. Always chews down to 1.008. I find it compliments the hops with the dryness of the beer.

What is with all the necro threads lately?

But from Munton's: Crystal Malt 150 130 – 170 49.5 – 64.6 IPA, bitter, mild, stout, porter < 15% Red is the Lovibond..
