Might be a silly question but I'm using washed yeast in an Enblish ale ( for the first time) and Mr Malty says I need 169 ml slurry; am I right that this is the amount from AFTER I make my starter and not what I have washed?

If you don't have that much settled slurry, that's in part what the starter is for. Figure a two liter starter of typical gravity will double your population. If you need 180 ml, 90 ml into a 2 liter starter should get you there, give or take. There are calculators all over the web to help calculate shaken vs stirred vs left alone.
