mini XLR vs XLR?

Can someone please explain to me what the difference is between these two? Are they compatable with one another? Can i buy standard XLR receptacles and use mini XLR plugs?

I have searched google a bit but have not been able to find a definite answer. I want to use them for powering motorized ball valves in my rig.

No, it's just like USB, Mini USB, and Micro USB. Different pin spacing.

Perfect timing, I was actually really excited last night when a bunch of mini-xlr and standard xlr connectors came in. Here is an example of a 3-pin mini pair at the top and a 4-pin xlr pair on the bottom.
