I was wondering if there were any glycol chiller experts lurking. (or HVAC)
I picked up a Micro Matic MMPP4302 off FB marketplace for a very good deal, because it had an issue. The unit was reported to be leaking from a fitting. I am a handy person... and I brazed the line and fixed the leak. the fitting coming out of the compressor on the high side had a tiny hole in the joint. I placed the unit under vacuum and then recharged the unit with R134A. The unit is holding pressure no leaks detected.
The unit doesn't operate in the "designed" pressures. The Danfoss label says it operates at 57psi low side and 185psi high side. I can get high side to the 185psi mark, but the low side is typically low, like 35-45psi.
Here are my observations. The unit isn't circulating warm water, so the evap coil isn't really under a load. The compressor is cool or cold to the touch, the low pressure gas line to the compressor will sweat because it is cold. high side gas is hot, high side liquid is warm. Frost builds up after the regulator device and on the return to the compressor can get ice. The compressor being cold is odd to me. as the unit runs colder and cold, the pressures on the gauges obviously show lower.
Do I need to get this thing loaded up so it's "working hard" and then monitor pressure? I was thinking of plumbing in some garden hoses laid out in the sun (SoCal) to give it a work out.
My thoughts are that I should replace the dryer/filter on the unit and get it working hard with warm water. I just don't wanna drain the unit of refrigerant again... but obviously if it'll help I want to do it.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
