I'm just wondering what it takes to make a bottle bomb, provided that fermentation is complete and that I mix in the priming sugar properly. The line is apparently between 2.5 and 4.5 volumes, since lambics call for bottling in champagne bottles. I'm just wondering what the ceiling is for carbonating in a standard beer bottle.

I guess you don't know until you make a bottle bomb. I'll stick to 2.5 volumes and less.

I wouldn't go above 3.5 volumes or so, but like DeathBrewer said, it depends on the bottles, some are much stronger than others.
