I made my own mash tun out of a spare cooler and parts from Lowe's. Instead of buying a stainless braided hose to use as a filter, I picked up a nylon one by mistake-I didn't realize it until I got home. So I installed it, the tun is leak proof so I know I did that much right, but my question is has anyone used a material other than Stainless for the filter? The Nylon is pretty tough and springs back to place when I put stress on it. Before I dump grain and water on it, I wanted to check and see if anyone has used one before or if I should just go get another hose and cut out the braid. Thanks.

I used a home made SS braid and it collapsed (and got stuck) on my first try. I ended up just shelling out $10 for a bazooka tube, which has made it all a breeze.

If it will hold up to the heat, you are fine. Safe bet that it wont last long though.

normally i wouldn't worry about stuff hot side, but this could cause problems with leaching off flavours, I would go back and get a SS braid just to be safe.
Good luck

I did the same thing when building my first mash tun and honestly I didn't notice any off flavours. Granted, this was at the start of my AG brewing career so there was much more significant off flavours coming from elsewhere in my brewing process. I rolled with it for awhile and a few months ago I was forced to go back to using this tun so I pulled all the bits apart to give it a good clean and replaced the braided hose with a ss one. You'll be ok but it'll be piece of mind to upgrade to ss when you can.
