Hi, Is there a reason I don't hear more people doing this? It would be great to save space and have a dual purpose for my mash tun, which is a converted gatorade water jug.

It would also be great because I could easily filter out the hops.

Thanks in advance for any help!

You'd need to be able to completely sanitize the mash tun, including the whole false bottom setup. I wonder how feasible that is?

Well my old cooler mash tun got pretty scratched up while I used it. While I did clean it and sanitize it it was never a huge issue as things are typically done in it pre boil. Bottling from it I wouldn't have ever done though as those scratches could harbor all kinds of unpleasant things

If you're going to use a brewing vessel, why not use your boil kettle? I would use a stainless vessel over a plastic (possibly scratched) mash tun any day.

Ah ok, that makes sense about scratches in the plastic. Can't use my boil kettle cause it doesn't have a valve :(
