Hello! I have a question about re-circulation of the mash. I am in the process of going to all grain and I have seen some people saying that they recommend re-circulation of the mash via a pump when direct firing the mash tun. Is this required when direct firing or does it just reduce the chances of burning the grain? Are there any other benefits of re-circulation?

If you're direct firing (which I also do), you need 1.) to make sure you use a false bottom to keep the grains off of direct contact with the heat source and 2.) recirculate to avoid stratification of the mash temperature, otherwise all the heat will reside in the bottom portion of the mash.

All you have to do is stir well with your mash paddle while applying direct heat.

No recirculation required and a braid will work fine if you're batch sparging.
