I am trying to figure out the total amount of wort I have before boiling my first AG batch. Do most people just mark there Kettle and if so how? Thanks for any replies.

You can mark the kettle with markers/lipstick/punch marks/etc., put notches in your paddle/rod/etc., or install a sight glass. Those are pretty much your options.

I made gallon marks on an oak dowel that I keep hanging from my brewstand.

I bought a yard stick and use that. I wrote down what measurements where what amounts, so 285 cm = 7 gallons for instance or somesuch. Just immerse the stick, take the measurement, and there ya go.
