Silver sharpie or perhaps a paint marker?? I just use a random sharpie and put a code name on my caps - e.g., CB for centennial blonde....

Paint marker would probably work great but might be a little time consuming to clean.
The arrow is supposed to be pointing at the second post.

I would usually just put a batch number on the cap. The ol' coconut can usually recall what number is what beer. If the ol' coconut fails, there is a backup log book.

If you can abbreviate the brew and still fit it onto the cap go for it. Best part is nothing to wash off the exterior.
