My neighbor offered me a gallon of maple syrup for $45 USD, his brother owns a tree farm. I thought maple syrup can't be too far from honey in regards to making a mead. Has anyone tried this? Do you think that it would be worth it to try and make it? Any yeast recommendations? I like EC-1118. Starting OG to aim for? This will be my first mead. I've done beer and ciders. Any tips or tricks are appreciated!

Yes you can use Maple Syrup, it's called an Acerglyn. Should be some theads around here if you search for it. The one I am looking at was I think 15 lb honey and half gallon syrup in primary, can't remember the yeast it calls for. Maple Syrup is (by law here in VT) just over 66% sugar, honey is around 78% (depending on the moisture content).
