Malt Grades?

I don't really know if I am even talking about this the right way, ie, as a "grade," but I noticed malts have a grade that roughly corresponds to how dark or light the malt is, eg, Maris Otter 6°L and Simpson's Medium 50°-60°L.

Can anyone tell me exactly what this means or point me to an online resource where I can read a bit more about it?

the number is the lovibond rating of the malt. it corresponds to its color. the higher the number, the darker the malt. and of course, this color change represents a change in the flavor of the malt. it doesnt really have anything to do with the grade or potency of the malt. each one is different in regards to precipatory points for alcohol making. you can find the corresponding number in beersmith or recipator. but that has nothing to do with lovibond.
