When using gas burner (propane, perhaps blichmann), and a keg as HLT, how often does one need to turn on the burner over the course of a sparge to keep it approx 170? Do you just keep it on low? Or do you have to turn it on and off several times?

I was going to get a 3rd keggle for a dedicated HLT to fly sparge with, but I thought of this same issue. I decided to go with a 10gal igloo cooler instead since its well insulated. To answer your question though, if you were to keep a lid on and wrap the keg in armaflex or water heater insulation, you might be able to get away with only kicking on the burner once or twice. That is merely skepticism though

Same, I might do same thing..get another 10 gallon for the HLT.

I only have one burner, so once I get about 1/4 of the wort in the BK, I kick on the heat to cut down my lag time to get to boil. Especially since I do 10gal brews
