I have seen many people build them, but i need one that can handle big starers.

Any lab brands anyone would recommend so i can search ebay for a used one?

My old unit is starting too go. It was a small unit purchased from the local high school.

If you make it well, even a simple computer fan setup can handle 1 gallon. I've made starters in one-gallon jugs and they worked great. Just make sure when you make it that you use two magnets and have them spaced/balanced perfectly and one facing up and one down. The stirstarters.com site has a great tip on building them (use piece of PVC pipe to center everything up).

not sure how big this one can go, but heard good things about them...

I just got mine from stirstarters(actually from rebelbrewer.com) and it works pretty dang good. I don't have anything big enough to test a gallon, but their site has pictures of a 5 L flask on the stir starter, so I imagine it could. The DIY instructions they have look pretty good, too.
