Licorice Root

What character does Licorice Root provide to a beer when used in the boil. General consensus I've researched so far is 1/2 oz. for 15 mins of the end of the boil.

Be careful! A brewer in my homebrew club made an Oatmeal Stout for our club contest and added licorice root and molasses. All we could taste is licorice which is fine if you are actually going for a licorice beer and entered it under Cat 23, but as an Oatmeal Stout, it scored the lowest!
