Not sure wether this is the right forum, I'm happy to move the thread (or it be moved for me).

I'm sure I'm not the only one who hasn't got a LHBS and whilst the internet is a good option for most, sometimes it's just better/easier to go to a LHBS. It's also nice to try somewhere new and support small businesses.

For me the easiest option is stopping by a LHBS when travelling and therefore, knowing close shops to airports is really useful. So I decided to start this thread in the hope that others will provide the information (I will then update this original post with the details). I don't have much to go with but I'll start it off in the hope that others will contribute.

Great idea for a thread!

I'll add that Adventures In Homebrewing is 6 miles from Detroit Metro (DTW)

Brewmasters, San Leandro, CA. 1 exit away from the Oakland airport (OAK) I think?

There are two near LAX:

Culver City Brewing Supply (4.2 miles North)
South Bay Brewing Supply (9 miles South)

And if you happen to be flying in or out of Long Beach, you're in luck because Stein Fillers is only a mile north.

Culver City Brewing Supply (4.2 miles North)

Possibly the shop that inspired the thread as I was connecting through LAX and had planned on heading here but got an earlier flight out instead.

Thanks for all the input. Hopefully the list will continue to grow. This will certainly be useful to me (and hopefully others). No need to confine to the USA if anyone has any international suggestions (although it may add in customs issues).

Define "close"

Most every homebrew shop in Milwaukee is within 15 miles of the airport

I'll leave that to others. If there is a airport, shop and distance posted then I'll add it. Sometimes its easier to travel a little further than go somewhere close - take MIA for example where there is a shopping area within a couple of miles of the airport but involves an expensive cab fare around the perimeter!

Arizona - Phoenix (PHX) there is Brewers Connections which is about 6 miles away in Tempe.

Edit:
Address:
1425 E University Dr # B103
Tempe, AZ 85281-8412
(480) 449-3720

Home Brew Mart (Slash Ballast Point Brewing Co) is just off the 8 near San Diego International (SAN).

A ways farther, maybe 20 minutes total driving (just a lot of side streets) is Home Brews and Gardens in North Park, and they have better hours, but way smaller selection. Only go there if I know they have something I need (basic grains/caps/yeast etc) and HBM is closed.

Home Brew Mart (Ballast Point Brewing Co): 5401 Linda Vista Rd # 406 San Diego, CA 92110

Home Brews and Gardens: 3176 Thorn St. San Diego, CA, 92104
619-630-BREW

Don't know the distances off-hand and too lazy to look em up, by My LHBS in Falls Church VA isn't too far from Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA) and Maryland Homebrew in Columbia MD isn't too far from Baltimore-Washington International (BWI)

Edit: decided too look them up, My LHBS is 8.5 miles from DCA and MDHB is 13.7 miles from BWI

Edit again:

My LHBS (that is the actual name of the shop)
6201 Leesburg Pike
Falls Church, VA 22044
703.241.3874

Maryland Homebrew
6770 Oak Hall Ln
Columbia, MD 21045

Charlotte - My LHBS Alternative Beverage has their warehouse location in Belmont (6.2 miles, 15 min west of CLT), and their [ame="http://maps.google.com/maps?oe=UTF-8&gfns=1&q=4450+South+Blvd,+Charlotte,+NC+28209-2673&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=4450+South+Blvd,+Charlotte,+NC+28209&gl=us&ei=hishTZuDKI-q8AaF1ZWLDg&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CBQQ8gEwAA"]South Blvd.[/ame] store (7.7 miles, 15 min east of CLT) -- both a quick dash, and one certainly has to be close to the reason why you're in Charlotte!

Liquor barn beaumont center parkway has supplies. 3.5 miles from klex. (Lexington Bluegrass KY)

Oregon

Steinbart was mentioned but Let's Brew is 7.1 miles and easy to get to from the airport. Homebrew Exchange is 7.9 miles, but not as convenient.

i don't understand, do people really do this?

how do you get 14 pounds of grain and 2 vials of "yeast" past TSA?

This is a great idea, but I think it would be better if folks actually took a moment, googled the address of the place, and posted that instead of just the name.

Adventures in Homebrewing:
23869 Van Born RD
Taylor, MI 48180
(313) 277-2739

Just to clarify, I put 20 miles in my post for home brews and gardens- that should have been 20 minutes. It's just slower getting there because it's farther from the freeway buried in a lot of tiny side streets.

Also: Revvy has a great point about the address. Post has been edited for both changes.

Just put the grain in 1 quart ziplok bags and place them all in the bin. Seriously, I've been in this situation with a couple hours to kill, and almost perused the local homebrew store. Didn't need anything, so I got a beer instead of course.

I like it... at least give you something to do on the long layovers or after buissness meetings. you could always put them in your checked bag

California, Fresno

Bencomo's Home Brew Supplies 7 miles from Fresno Yosemite International airport. Small shop, decent amount of supplies.

Northern Brewer
1150 Grand Avenue
Saint Paul, MN 55105

Is ~6.5 miles away from Minneapolis-St. Paul International.

There's also one in Minneapolis that is ~7.5 miles away if you're in that area as well.

6021 Lyndale Ave S
Minneapolis, MN 55419

Boise, ID - Brewer's Haven is 1.6 miles from the airport. In addition to your normal homebrew supplies they also stock 500+ different beers and have 4 or 5 beers on tap. There is a small sectioned off area with tables and chairs where you can enjoy your purchase.

Brewer's Haven
1795 S. Vista Ave.
Boise Idaho 83705

i don't understand, do people really do this?

I did. When a shipping forwarding company charges $25-30 for shipping and clearing 6lbs of malt extract (on top of shipping charges from store) you need to find less ideal options!

Great idea, I’ve added addresses when they have been posted (don’t have time to look them up myself though). On that issue, if people edit an address to a previous post make a new post too (or PM me) so I know to look for it.

If anyone actually uses this thread in the future, post to say so. It would be satisfying to know its been useful to others too.

If we could get all the 50 states covered, and as many airports in the larger states as possible, I'd like to see this stickeyed. That's why i think the addresses are important.

Sounds great to me (especially if getting it stickied means others can help update the original post!!). Ideally it would also have weblinks where available but that is beyond me at the moment!

I believe our little airport has one little HBS nearby.

Burlington (BTV?) - Vermont Homebrew Supply 147 E. Allen Street (Route 15) Winooski, VT 05404

It's about 4 miles down the Interstate.

Here's the addresses for the Portland stores:

Let's Brew
8235 SE Stark Street, Portland OR 97216
(503) 256-0205

Homebrew Exchange
1907 N Kilpatrick, Portland, OR 97217
(503) 286-0343

F.H. Steinbart
234 SE 12th Avenue, Portland, OR 97214
(503) 232-8793

There's more in the area, but these are the closest.

And for all you people making a stop in Portland...

No sales tax in Oregon. Go ahead and check in that conical fermenter for your next flight :mug:

Not sure if non-local folks would find this easier or if it'd make it more confusing but it might make sense to to change the DCA/My LHBS entry from Virginia to Washington DC, as it's DCs airport and both locations are just a few miles from downtown Washington DC. And IIRC the airport has a DC address (I know at least a few buildings on the airport grounds have DC addresses).
