I'm trying to make a homemade lacto starter for a berliner weisse I want to brew next saturday. I filled a mason jar with boiling water, added 3 tablespoons of DME, cooled the wort down to 100º and put a handful of pilsner and wheat malt in it. It's been almost 24 hours and I'm not seeing anything other than the grains floating back to the top.

Has anyone done this before? Should I be smelling or seeing any activity? Should I put it on my stir plate? Thanks for any input.
