I have a concerted chest freezer that I have been using for a couple years, last weekend the temp began to creep up a little. It was humid in my basement and some frost formed inside, I unplugged and out some rags in there for a day then plugged it back in. Now I can't get it to go below 50f.

Before I go get a new one, anything I should try? It was used when I got it, seems fairly old.

I found a nice newer one around the same size for $100 so might just buy that and see if I can make this a bigger ferm chamber.

I'm no fridge expert but I would think it could be three things

Compressor= toss it

Low on Freon - not sure if there rechargeable

Good chance its the thermostat. Just override it and use an inkbird controller...I had the same problem on my kegorator and overrode the thermostat and now I can get it to any temp I want....Worth a shot before you toss it as its a free repair

I'm betting it's low on refrigerant. If it isn't cooling well and you see frost concentrated in one corner, that's a dead give-away. What's left of the refrigerant is flashing as soon as it hits the evaporator. May even find the pumped side tubing in the compressor compartment is cold.

I've read of this phenomenon countless times on HBT: chest freezer used to work, unplugged for a day or more for whatever reason, plugged back in and it's weak if not totally fubar. My guess is the lines buried inside the cabinet rust out and they was going anyway, but letting them sit unpowered seems to push them off the ledge...
