Hi, I am about to start my first ever brew. I will be brewing lager.

I read somewhere that it's better to bottle lager after fermentation, rather than put it in a keg, but I have inherited a keg, and so it would be far cheaper for me to use that rather than buy bottles. Would it make that much difference to the quality of the lager if i kegged it rather than bottled it?

First, welcome to the forum.

Second, there shouldn't be any noticeable difference between bottling and kegging. Expcept for the fact kegging is a lot easier.

Well, the thing is that even though you have a keg, do you have a spare fridge, regulator, CO2 tank, disconnects, hose and a dispenser? If not it is much easier to break into brewing with bottles.
