I have a 15 gallon keg that I'm planning to use as brew pot. I cut the top. Does anyone have advice for where to drill the hole for the ball valve and the ball valve size.

Check out bargainfittings.com. They will sell you what you need to do this (for a great price) and also show you how and where to install it.

Yeah a lot of us use them they are called keggles as in part keg part kettle. Either search hbt or google and you will find tons of info about them. Bargain fittings sells no weld valve kits that are great I've had one for a while with no problems they also sell the must have sight gauge/thermometer. Chopps.
