I ordered 7 hop rhizomes of 5 different varieties from hopsdirect.com on Monday and received them today.

They sent me one more of each of the varieties than I ordered (1=2 and 2=3) which means I got 12 for the price of 7. They all looked very healthy and had multiple eyes starting.

I got them all planted in starter pots and will keep them indoors for about 1 month.

I paid $7 each for the 7 rhizomes that I ordered which I felt was a bit high but they were the only ones shipping to Washington at the time (our state has a quarantine on hops). Given the fact that I got 5 free rhizomes I am very happy with the price I paid and would highly recommend them.

Also I moved my 1 year old hallertau plant inside on Monday. On Monday three bines had just broke the surface. Today they are about 8 inches tall.

I'll update this thread with their progress.

nice pics. i wanted to give it a go this spring as well but the hoa doesn't let me have anything over six feet high in the backyard. still looking for ways around that...

good luck.

How about building a three sided triangle trellis and then train them to go around then up or go back and forth and up? 5-6 ft high should give enough area for them.

yeah, right after i posted that i looked through the interwebs & found people growing hops horizontally--i can definitely give that a shot.

The 1 year old hallertau is cruising along at 29 inches!!! This equates to about 5 inches a day.

5 of the 12 rhizomes have broken the surface too.

We're now up to 46 inches in the hallertau which means it slowed to an average of just over 3.5" per day since it broke the surface.

7 of the 12 rhizomes have broken the surface:

Cascade - newest one yet

Columbus - 1st to break the surface but has had very slow growth

In case anyone was wondering they were all planted in a 50/50 mix of compost and potting soil, were lightly brushed with clonex and have been watered with miracle grow.

I've been working on a raised bed with a 16 foot trellis for 3-4 of them and 1/2 wine or whiskey barrels for the rest with twine to the roof ~22 feet above.

Hallertau is pushing 5 feet:

Centennial is growing nicely along with willemite and chinook:

I'm starting to worry that the hallertau is going to be too large to transplant this year. Any ideas? It'll probably be 7+ feet by the time I can put it outside as I'm still building the raised bed / trellis and my days off are very limited right now.

It can work if you are careful during the planting operation. If you break or crush a bine you would just train a new one.
I had 16 cascades last year that I received from Homercidal that were in 1 gal pots all between 5-8' and I managed to plant them permanently last July 4th after I finally got my 17' trellis system all built. I kept duct taping dowel rods, tree branches, etc end to end as they grew. Some were 8'. It was a bear trying to plant them without breaking them but it got done. Just be careful.

The Hallertau is 7+ feet right now and I will be planting it in the next week or so. I decided to put it in a half wine barrel and run it up the side of my house. I'll put three of the other varieties in a raised bed planter / trellis and another 3 in half wine barrels.

Most of the rhizomes have started and some are growing fairly rapidly (some are 2+ feet). Both my centennial's haven't shown any signs of life yet. I know its early but I'm starting to wonder about them. The Chinooks are the strongest grower so far.

I really need to get going on the trellis.
