I'm putting a lager into the 5 gal keg and letting it sit in a walk-in cooler for a couple of months, then having a few people down for the weekend and drinking it all.
My plan is to build a trashcan/laundry bin thing that I can fill with ice and put my keg in for when get ready to drink it.

I was thinking of getting a handheld CO2 cartridge charger and picnic tap and just using that.

any suggestions?

Sounds fine...but later, get a CO2 tank with fittings and you will have better beer, more alternatives for usage, and more fun.

No matter, you sound like you are on the right track!!!

Enjoy the new year!!

I'm not sure about the better beer part, but with a CO2 tank you would have more versatility.
Without a CO2 tank, you can still make awesome kegged beer. Does bottle conditioned beer not taste as good as kegged? Using priming sugar in a keg just uses the keg as a giant, bottle conditioning beer. The pressure in the keg wont be enough to push the beer out, you may only get a couple glasses, so you would need a CO2 charger at least to push the beer out.
