I recently built a brutus 10 hybrid and am about to mount banjo burners to it. I see that many people fabricate a heatshield around the burners and many do not. Is it completely necessary to do this? ImageUploadedByHome Brew1389107965.983163.jpg

I brew outside on my pseudo-brutus stand, so I definitely need a shield. Not only does it direct the heat towards the keggle, but also protects the flame from wind. Inefficient use of your propane (or whatever fuel) will really jack up the cost/batch.

Colohox, i was thinking the same but wasn't sure if not having shielding would make noticeable difference in regards to gas efficiency. The wind, for me, isn't much of a concern because if it's windy at all, i'll just roll the stand into the garage and brew in there.
