According to beersmith, the folowing hop additions (to an IPA recipe i made ) to a partial mash recipe is giving me a total of 77 IBU's. Thats seems insanely low for waht im putting in.

Am i doing something wrong?

Amount Item Type
2.00 oz Amarillo Gold [8.60%] (60 min) Hops
1.00 oz Chinook [11.40%] (60 min) Hops
1.00 oz Amarillo Gold [8.20%] (60 min) Hops
1.00 oz Amarillo Gold [7.20%] (60 min) Hops
Add 1.00 oz Amarillo Gold [7.23%] (30 min)
Add 1.00 oz Amarillo Gold [8.50%] (15 min)

Full boil vs partial boil will lower the utilization. And why so many hops at 60 minutes? You're going to lose most of if not all of their flavor/aroma that make IPAs so awesomel

Also, the amount of extract or grains will lower IBUs, but honestly you should be around 130 IBUs with the 60 min hops alone at a full boil.

im using a 3 gallon pot and when I add taht to my equipment it drops the hosp from 139 9witha 5 gallon pot) to 77 (3 gallon).

Anyway, this is the recipe.

I mean, in beersmith. Lower your extract to 3 lbs, then do another entry for the other 4 lbs of extract and specify that it will be added at flameout. Beersmith will make the IBU adjustments.

You can change it to 2 at the start and 5 at flameout if you want to inch out a few more.

edit: actually, you could easily get away with adding all the extract at flameout and just boiling with what you get from your grains and a little water to make your boil volume, if necessary. That's what I do with most of my partial mash brews.

OK something must not be right, I entered your hops schedule (as writted) into my beersmith and added 7lbs of light extract for a 5 gallon extract batch and the software is showing 218 IBU's.
I don't know if I am off or maybe you've missed something in yours??

Oopsie, I read a little more then changed mine to a 3 gallon pot also but that still gave me 172 IBU's so again, what's going on?

Plugging in that recipe gives me 183 IBUs. Are you set to a 5 gallon batch?
Edit: actually I can't think of or see anything that would be causing that.

What formula are you using to calculate IBU levels, Tinseth, Rager?

Doh, that fixed it for me, I don't know why but mine was set for Rager, when I put it back to Tinseth I get 112 IBU's. That was weird cause I am usually at Tinseth.
