Idea for a smoked beer

I have an idea. I plan on doing sierra nevada pale ale before long. I want to get enough grain for 10 gallons and split it. I plan on doing 5 gallons according to the recipe and then do 5 gallons with some smoked grains. I was just wanting some feedback on how much of the grain I should smoke. A pound or two? Or more? Plus I was wondering what kind of wood I should smoke with? I thought about using some hickory or applewood. Do either of those sound like a good idea? I would appreciate any feedback.
