So I decided to make my first starter and I think I screwed up. I followed some instructions and I think I screwed up on the conversion and didn't anticipated evaporation of the boil.

This is what I did

Its for a beer with and OG of 1.050

Boiled 1.8L of water and put in 6oz of DME, boiled for 15 minutes, 10 minutes before end of boil put in some yeast nutrition (I was little confused about how much to put in so I put 1/4 tsp). Chilled wort down to 70 degrees and than put in a 2L flask. It only came up to the 1.2L mark. Should have I boiled and chilled some more water to make it 2L? Should I just chuck the starter and use a spare smack pack for when I brew?

For God's sake man don't chuck! Your ratio of water to DME was just under the 10:1 recommendation. Somebody here will probably do a calc for you but pretty sure your gravity is not higher, or much higher than the 1.040 range.

Save your money, pitch the yeast and make a starter with it!

Check out MR. Malty or The Yeast Calculator. (if you haven't already)

No u are just making a starter not a full blown beer. All u need is some water and dme to make a mini batch of beer. The important thing is that there are sugars for the yeast to attack. Water plus dme will do that and you don't have to worry about boil off just pitch your Yeats, it's all good.
