Is there any animal you wouldn't eat?

I don't mean if it's life or death but just for the hell of it.

I've eaten the usual Zebra, croc, camel, goat, elephant, lion, crow stuff.

I wouldn't bother with the camel again. It's just a little tasteless, fatty and chewy.
I don't like to eat animals that have been reared cruelly and I like to know where my food comes from and it needs to be good quality so that takes McDs, KFC and the like out of the equation along with most other proccessed junk food. but apart from that I'd say anything goes.

Not to sure about dogs though. Never been faced with the opportunity and can't see the situation arising.

Don't think I'd eat anything that is endangered either.

I wouldn't eat a human.. probably the only animal i wouldn't eat (for food anyway).... Oh yeah.. rat... why would you want to eat a rat? If there's a rat around you KNOW you can find better food, in fact no rodents would be worth it... Songbirds have no meat on them so i wouldn't bother...

Damnit i just wasted my 200th post on THIS?!?

I've eaten most game that is legally "shootable" in NC. Don't care much for squirrels or geese, but ducks and deer are good. Quail is probably the best to me.

Also eaten the gimmicky stuff like alligator at "Cajun" restaurants, but it didn't do much for me.

While not really bizarre, I've taken quite a liking to bison lately. The meat is fairly available now and it makes great hamburgers.

I won't eat duck or bison and SWMBO won't eat veal, duck, or lamb. When we were in St. Croix we kept seeing "Dolphin Salad" on menus and she was mortified, I didn't tell her it was the dolphin fish and not an actual dolphin.

mmmmm..... bison

That is some good eating.

Besides that, alligator and venison, I dont think that Ive eaten anything other meat thats out of the mainstream.

I wouldn't eat a dog for sure.

I also wouldn't eat anything endangered - just seems wrong. I also wouldn't eat anything highly intelligent like a dolphin ape/monkey or human.

Then there are things I find disgusting or creepy - insects, worms, bats and those types of things. Also, things that are potentially lethal like that fugu fish people eat in Japan. I don't want to tempt fate

That about covers it I think

Why not duck, bison or lamb? All good eating.
Veal I understand due to the only eat a happy animal issue.

I've eaten a fair amout of ostrich and roo.
I like fresh seefood but nothing that tastes tooo fishey or salty.

Not too keen on eating the heads of anything. Although I think I may of done with out knowing. Language barrier can be a bugger in Arabic and Eastern countries.

I haven't tried any carnivores. Skunk, passed on that. Ditto, bobcat. Raw bugs & worms, no thank you. Some beetles are good roasted. Had a couple kinds of snake. Monkey is really tough, but I only had that once. Beaver, not bad. Small birds in pies, too crunchy.

What about animal parts? Brain, liver, sweet breads...?

I'm not too crazy about the meat of predators, unless you're considering fish. I've had bear, rattlesnake and tiger and haven't cared much for any of them. Weirdest thing would be crow jerky. It wasn't that bad.

People always crack up when I tell that I've eaten beaver, but it's not a joke. I've had smoked beaver tail. it was pretty dang good. Roast beef-like.

I can't hardly stand oily fish like Salmon and those hatchery trout taste like powerbait to me. Also, I won't eat armadillo because of the leprosy issue.

I won't eat a dog, cat, or any other domesticated animal. Nor am I a fan of rodents. I avoid veal on principal, but in secret I love it. But I don't order it. I try to stay away from animals that are threatened or endangered, like Chilean sea bass. I would never eat an insect or earth-dwelling critter. I guess I'm fairly traditional with my meats. I like the meats that most people eat, and I'll try exotics as long as they're not canine or feline or rodent.

As for fowl, I'm not impressed with duck or goose. Geese are pretty much a pest animal where I'm from, I call them Suburban Pigeons (pigeons, of course, being winged rats).

I love meat, but I try to eat it responsibly. Currently, the beef I eat was raised on my FIL's farm so I know what it was fed and the conditions where it was raised.

I like meat, and I don't get too hung up on being responsible about its origins. I'm sure there are some awfully cruel slaughterhouses and ranches, I just don't get involved in those debates because I'm blissfully uninformed (and I intend to stay that way, so keep your carnivorously responsible speeches to yourselves). Now pass me a plate of veal parmesan, please!

(actually, I'm going to be a bit of a hypocrite...I pass on veal most of the time because it does seem a little cruel...but it does taste good...)

I dislike most seafood, especially raw, and I find rodents and most insects rather rough on the palate.

I may have eaten dog - it's quite prevalent in Korea, especially in rural areas. I've never intentionally ordered it, and the idea makes me a little nauseous, but there's a chance I've been served something cut with a bit of canine. The dog trade is being cut back here because they REALLY do cruel things to the dogs (like throw them into the pressure cooker ALIVE!). Guess that's where I draw the line morally...

Geez, I keep coming back to the moral debate over meat. F*** it, I have incisors. I'm not going veg.

I used to be a veg until I worked at a resturant and they made apple wood smoked bacon everyday. They provided food but the veg fare was pretty weak especially compaired with bacon smells everymorn.

I have eatten a few weird things nothing really new I have liked the sweetbreads I have had and I had brain once and it was one of the better meals I have ever had.

No dogs, cats, rats or humans, thanks. And I'd probably pass on squirrel or most other rodent-like varmints. But any seafood, fowl, or other meaty four-legged thing is fair game. I love veal, too, and have no qualms about eating it.

My favorite 'exotics' are alligator, bison and duck. Alligator and duck have to be done right, though, and a lot of restaurants are incapable of doing them correctly. I only eat duck if I cook it myself.

Anyone ever seen Tony Bourdain on TV? Now that guy has eaten some truly funky stuff in his travels! I remember the worst thing I saw him eat was iguana tail in South America. He nearly lost it on camera.

Get a copy of his books - lots better than the show. Kitchen Confidential and Cooks Tour, both highly recommended.

Iguana is delicious! It's not like he was eating lima beans or something...

:cross:

You know, I thought iguana was good, too. I was a little tipsy when it was offered, so i didn't really even think about it. It sorta grosses me out, now. But it was good at the time.

We are all hoping that that is the answer... otherwise....?

Nah, i was thinking more along the lines of...... nevermind.... yes that was the answer....

Bison and Buffalo (same thing really) is GREAT meat... Really lean, full of flavor... had a buffalo roast the other day... better than beef...

Deer, Lamb, Buffalo, and Duck are all good... Personally Frog Legs are just too rubbery for me.... and i can't believe no one has yet to mention RABBIT!

Rabbit isn't out of the ordinary. I eat it a couple of times a year in game pie along with the odd squirrel.

I think the frogs legs I had were a little under done. They kept kicking the peas of my plate.
Seriously though I was a bit surprised to find they came still attached to the frogs arse.

Not out of the ordinary but still damn good meat...

BTW if anyone is wondering about the 'dolphin fish' a couple threads back it's also called Mahi Mahi... It's some of the best fish i've ever eaten cooked... best raw... Flounder...

So, Orfy, when you say you like animals, you mean like this guy?
