I got a 2nd glass carboy for Christmas that I'm using for my primary fermenter. The only problem is, the hole at the top is not big enough to get a specific gravity reading with my hydrometer. It will fit through the hole, but there is no way I could get it out. How do you check specific gravity if it's going straight from the kettle to the glass carboy?

take a sample with a sanitized turkey baster. Don't dump it back though. Just enjoy. Also refrain from taking to many samples, though. You just risk infection.

I only take samples when I suspect something is wrong, or I'm racking.
