One thing I've always struggled with when getting a hydrometer reading is foam riding up the sides of the test jar, or the stalk. Lately I've started wiping the tiniest amount of fermcap (squeeze the little bottle so a bead forms on the tip, then dab that) - this is enough to knock down any foam making it vastly easier to see where your fluid level is.
