I'm an avid forager/hunter/gatherer and today was the opening day of bow season in Michigan. I got up early, and wasn't very optimistic for a morning hunt but it's supposed to rain and be windy this afternoon/evening and for the next few days. So I went out before dawn to set up.

I've seen about 6-8 different bucks (buck only hunt where I live) but not routinely or during the day very often.

But I did see this beautiful boy on my trail cam three days ago:

So I was hoping to at least see a deer. I saw four- a doe, a spike, and then a forkhorn, and then this guy. He came in FAST- and I barely had time to set up. I took a shot quickly, because he and the smaller buck were getting ready to jostle each other.

And here is the result- my biggest buck taken with my bow.

What a rush it was for me- I rarely even see big bucks and this one had my heart pounding!

Nice buck, to this day my heart still starts pounding even when the small ones walk in. Something about how close they get during bow season. I have to say I'm a fan of the antler point restriction, in my 20+ years of hunting I've seen two nice bucks. Sadly my side of the state is still full of hunters that have the theory "If it's brown it's down." Beautiful deer though, should taste great! You going to do a mount?

Great buck Yooper! I bet your heart was pounding when he came in range! Now you'll have all that great venison to look forward to!

John

Congratulations!! Nice Deer :) Do you have APR's in your county? We are in year 5 i believe and have seen a marked difference! No doe tags at all in your county either? Seems odd! :)

Yes, just a cap/antler mount for our cabin with the photos of him from the trail cam. He was gorgeous, but I don't have a ton of $$$ to spend for a full head mount. If I was going to do it, this would have been the guy. Not huge antlers, but totally symmetrical, and a gorgeous blonde head.

No doe tags for about three years, even with a bow. And we get either a combo license, which has APR, or a one buck per year per hunter license. We used to be able to take a deer in bow season, and then a deer in rifle season, but not anymore. And our county is being overrun by deer, at least in the south part. We are likely having a city hunt next year just to thin the deer herd. It's weird, but the Natural Resource Commission is mostly political, and not based on biological evidence recommended by the local wildlife biologists (my husband was one of them, now long retired).

Congrats Yooper...... You are awesome... I love Deer roast cooked with potatoes, carrots and onions and Deer stew..... I usually turn everything but the backstrap into small roasts and stew meat....

Cheers!!! :mug:

Well, I was going to start a hunting thread but found this one. Can we give it a go on a revival?

My main thoughts on this was to see if anyone from our friendly norther bordering country (Canada) was into hunting? I am looking at trying to go either this fall or next spring. White-tail or black bear and looking for outfitter recommendations. I have looked through bookyourhunt.com and tourismsaskatchewan.com, there are just too many to sift through. Word of mouth sometimes yields the best results.

Season starts in one week!

Bow season started October 1 here...............but I was busy cleaning up after Hurricane Helene in Florida until this weekend. And now we have Hurricane Milton bearing down. However, I'm in upper Michigan and going to go out tomorrow (finally). Good luck to you!

Temps back into the mid 80s here. Went out four days so far, but this heat is keeping me back at the house for a bit. Well, tomorrow is going to be a brew day :mug:

Last year up near Ashland, WI (St. Peter's Dome area), we had nothing but dry brown ground all the way through hunting season. Add in a brutal, late winter the previous year, and we saw virtually nothing, very little sign, and only one doe. I'm afraid we're at a new normal.

It is warm and breezy here, so we’re not seeing much but we do have some venison in the freezer! I’ve seen some HUGE bucks on my camera but they are more nocturnal until the rut gets going a bit more.

Hope you have some cooler weather this year. Never a bad time in the woods, and we love ranging the Chequamegon still hunting miles regardless. I think this year might be better. Poor creatures had a terrible winter year before last, but this last one being so mild, hope they had a chance for a better year.

Moose season starts september 1st here, most hunters associations have filled their quota by now.
I haven't had time for the moose hunt due to newly started university studies but the tempo is gonna slow down a little now so I'll be able to squeeze in some beaver and roe-deer hunting.
I have a friend who has inherited a homestead further inland with forest properties and subsequently hunting rights so hopefully we'll get some capercaille and black grouse aswell.

People up here had some issues with a warm september, not abnormally warm but enough so that the dogs had to be called in and the hunt ended by noon.
Overheating dogs is not fun to deal with...

Same when I was growing up. Hunting in SC around Charleston area where dogs are allowed and the season opens mid-Aug. Fun, but not-fun.
