Im testing a 1 gallon batch this weekend with a pretty high hop profile (the 5 gal recipe calls for 14 ounces of hops) and a 90 min boil. Just curious as to how much water I should start with to get a full 1 gallon net.

3 gallons if you can get it to a boil with your setup.

1.5 gallons lost over the 1.5 hour boil. Correct the amount if your system is known to do more or less.

.5 gallon left behind in the kettle with the hops and trub.
Big IPA's are famous for wort hogging, especially if you use whole leaf.

This leaves you with 1 gallon of clean beautiful wort to ferment.

As for the gravity to shoot for you want it to be right for the entire 1.5 gallons remaining before leaving the final .5 gallon behind. So the gravity at the start of the boil should be half of your target gravity so it boils down to the intended final gravity.

If the desired OG is 1.080 for 1.5 gallons the gravity for the 3 gallons at start of the boil should be 1.040.
