how much room to leave in fermenter?

I just brewed a batch of pale ale tonight. 2nd batch so far. When i dumped my wort into the pre boiled water in my fermenter and it came really close to the top. at that point i didnt know if i should dump some or be ok. should i attach some sort of blow off? I have it sitting in a 20 gallon tub just incase
 
I would put a blowoff on it just in case. What are you using as a fermenter?
 
Its food grade 5 gallon bucket. I ordered a glass carboy but hasn't shown up yet :(
 
Gotcha. I did the same on my first go a few months ago. I now use a 6.5G carboy as a primary and have some 5G's as secondary's. I still use a blowoff for the first little bit of primary just because I don't want any surprise explosions.
