I started wondering this a few minutes ago so I did a quick calculation:
I make 4.5L batches (~1.19 gallons) for which I use 3 cartons of clear applejuice which cost €0.99 each. I use 1 packet of champagne yeast which costs me €1.35 and 200g (~7 oz.) tablesugar, which costs me 1/5 * €0.85 = €0.17. Total = €4.49 per batch which means I pay €4.49 which means I pay €3.78 per gallon of Apfelwein. Which at current rates is about three billion dollars per gallon :p

Nah just kidding, it's about $5.60 / gallon.

How do you guys do?

That's expensive Apfelwein.
Around here you can get 2 gal of Motts Applejuice at Costco for less than $6, a $0.50 packet of yeast and 1# of sugar for about $1. (All estimates)
If I'm making 6gal batches thats about $3.5/gal. I think i can use fresh pressed juice for less than $5.60.

Around $33/gallon, as I just ordered the two pounds of dextrose specifically to make Apfelwein.

Okay, I bought some other stuff to spread the ship shipping charges out, but still.

I must point out that ~€1.00 per litre really isnt so expensive it's just that the dollar is pretty cheap right now.

Don't health stores carry pound-packs of dextrose? Here they cost something like €4,00.

8.28 for 12 - 1.2 Liter Cans of Juice
2.99 for 1 - 15 Liter Primary (PET water bottle c/w water!)
0.49 for 1 - yeast
0.99 for 1.5 lbs dextrose
----
12.75 for 14.4 Liters

or

0.89/Liter with a new primary or 0.68/Liter without!
