As of today, my Newcastle clone has been sitting in the primary for 4 weeks. The carboy is covered with a black t-shirt, no light getting in.

With that being said ...

How long is too long for beer to sit in the primary?

Can of worms, seriously.
I do 4 weeks with pretty much everything that doesn't get something added after fermentation.

Look at the bottom of this page for similar threads. There are tons.

Generally the longer you let it sit, the more time it has to develop and that will make it taste better. That being said, you would be fine bottling it or kegging at this point. You would also be fine letting it sit longer if you wanted to.

The consensus seems to be, that even after 6 months, the chance of off flavors is still minimal. Again, it probably depends on the yeast cake size, etc.
