I am relatively new to mead making. I am making a peach melomel. I added the peaches to the secondary and plan on keeping them on the mead for 4-6 weeks. I know there are a lot of you that add the fruit to the primary. But, feel free to answer if you add fruit to the primary as well. On average, how long do you keep the fruit on your mead in the secondary?

My experience is that leaving fruit in the mead (or wine- I make far more wines) for more than a week or two means the fruit starts to decay and turn colors. I like using fruit in primary, since it's easier to remove.

With some fruits, extended contact time in secondary creates bitterness, or vegetal flavors/odors. I usually won't leave it on the fruit for more than 1-2 weeks.
