I dont wanna keep the slants in a frost-free freezer and since that's the only thing I have, I think I'll have to use the fridge. How long can I store slants at 40 F(4 ºC)?

6 months more or less?

Definitely do not freeze them! My rule of thumb is 4 months in the fridge. I consider anything longer questionable. To stretch the length longer at the 4 month mark make a starter, chill it, and recollect the yeast. Then restart the 4 month timer, and of course brew a beer, cuz why take the effort of a starter and not brew a beer
